UTMy Students Collaborate with Alphie Holding for Brainwave Research

UTMy students recently had the valuable opportunity to collaborate with Mr. Taishiro Miyayauchi, Chief Corporate Officer of Alphie Holding, as part of their Problem-Based Learning (PBL) programme.
The PBL programme focuses on identifying and solving real-world challenges. A student proposed a study on “Stress Reduction through Meditation” and sought to quantify stress levels using Electroencephalogram (EEG) brainwave measurement. While such research typically requires large-scale medical equipment, the cooperation of Alphie Holding allowed the students to realize their ambitious research plan.
Alphie Holding is currently developing innovative wearable EEG devices.
Mr. Miyauchi kindly supported the students by providing two wearable units and professional guidance. Over a two-day period, the students successfully collected brainwave data from three participants. Notably, the use of these portable wearable devices allowed the students to conduct their data collection entirely on campus, eliminating the need to visit specialized medical institutions or use bulky laboratory equipment.
This collaboration proved to be mutually beneficial. While the students were able to conduct high-level research within their own university environment, the data gathered through their activities will provide valuable insights to Alphie Holding for their ongoing device development.
This meaningful partnership between industry and academia is expected to inspire UTMy students to pursue innovative research, while demonstrating how the wearable technology can be applied to address complex health and wellness issues in society.
